Hurricane Irma - Order and Communication Delays

Due to Hurricane Irma, Smart Material Corporation in Sarasota, Florida will be closed on Monday, September 11, 2017 and most likely Tuesday, September 12. If electricity and communication are down for an extended period of time we will not be able to read or work on your emails. Welcome to our new website!

Smart Material has completely recreated Smart-Material.com to create a mobile-friendly, easily accessible website. Designed in 2009 the old Smart Material page was mostly for desktop internet use only and did not scale properly for mobile and tablet users. We needed to make sure our clients have a wider range of access from all kinds of devices. The new site features a fun, easy-to-use design and comprehensive navigation so you can find what you are looking for.

As part of the redesign we moved all the video clips to our popular Smart Material YouTube channel for easier access and compatible streaming formats. We also merged the sections presentation and publications for better access to our growing archive of documentation.

Rutgers University receives 2017 NASA University Leadership Initiative Award

Dr. Onur Bilgen, Assistant Professor at Rutgers University, is a co-principal investigator for one of the five projects awarded under the 2017 NASA University Leadership Initiative. The project consists of a multidisciplinary team of researchers from the lead institute University of Tennessee, and Penn State University, Texas A&M University, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Rutgers University, University of Wyoming, Boeing Research & Technology, and Airfoils Incorporated. The 5-year, $10M effort will strive to demonstrate the viability of an ultra-efficient wing aerodynamic design based on slotted, natural-laminar-flow airfoils. As a part of this NASA ULI project, Dr. Bilgen’s research group at Rutgers University will design, model, develop and demonstrate a piezocomposite trailing edge for ultra-efficient commercial vehicles in the 100-210-passenger class.

The Macro Fiber Composite actuators will be considered.
