Macro Fiber Composite - MFC

The Macro Fiber Composite (MFC) is the leading low profile actuator and sensor, offering high performance, durability and flexibility. Available as an elongator (P1-type) and contractor (P2-type), the applications are ranging from vibration control, structural control (morphing), strain sensing, guided wave transducer and energy harvesting.
Available in over 20 different standard sizes, it is also available in customized sizes to meet specific application requirements, including array configurations.

MFC Features:

  • Flexible and durable
  • High strain capabilities, up to 2000ppm
  • Directional actuation and sensing
  • Available as elongator (d33 mode) and contractor (d31 mode)
  • Conforms to surfaces, typically bonded
  • Readily embeddable into composite materials
  • Damage tolerant
  • Sealed package

Monolithic Multilayer Actuators

Monolithic or sometimes also called co-fired Stack Actuators are consisting of up to 500 layers of piezo ceramic material, typically 0.1 mm thick and manufactured by using a specially
developed stacking and sintering technology. This technology allows to achieve the maximum displacement at a voltages of only 200 V. Typical Stack Actuators are yielding very high blocking forces of up to 8kN with free strain between 25µm and 80µm.

Smart Material is the distributing Stack Actuators of Ceramtec, AG which are manufactured in Lauf, Germany

Piezo Ceramic Fibers

Smart Material is manufacturing Piezo Ceramic Fibers for customers who are interested in building their own actuators and sensors.

Piezo Ceramic Fibers are available in diameters of 105µm, 250µm and 800µm and different PZT materials. Smart Material is utilizing a textile spinning method to manufacture green PZT fibers. The manufacturing process is based on the ALCERU® method of our partners

Smart Fiber AG, Germany.

The Piezo Ceramic Fibers are shipped only un-electroded and un-poled, requiring electroding and poling equipment at the customer's site.
